Toothy Tote - a mesh-bottomed bag for outdoor exploring

$5.00

Does ANYONE have kids who don't gather things (rocks, leaves, bit of "interesting" trash from parking lots, etc.) everywhere they go? I designed this bag especially for outdoor exploring. It has a screen bottom to let the sand and dirt fall out (and hopefully stay outside). It has a zippered front opening and a permanently-closed top - easy to drop treasures into the bag and almost impossible for them to spill out accidentally. It has big googly eyes - just for fun. My daughter is CRAZY about this bag - and that makes me very, very happy.

Head over to the Shiny Happy Sewing group to see some photos of my first prototype for the bag. I made him with what I happened to have on hand - so no nice bright white teeth - but he's a cyclops version that might be a fun option for you.

Materials you'll need:
  • 1/3 yard oilcloth, vinyl, or other waterproof fabric
  • scrap of fiberglass window screen (available in repair kits at home         improvement stores)
  • 7 inch white zipper
  • 1 yard of 1-inch wide nylon webbing (or strapping)
  • scraps of white fabric
  • 2 black buttons (5/8 inch and 7/8 inch)
  • sewing machine with a zipper foot, thread, basic sewing tools
Skills you'll need (links take you to video tutorials):
Time it will take:
  • a few hours
Ready? Let's sew!
$5.00

PS - Jo (my daughter) wanted me to be sure to point out that the screened bottom does more than let the sand and dirt fall out - it also lets air in, making this a good bag for carrying special stuffed animals securely zipped in. Because the screen lets them breathe, of course. Silly me for not even thinking of that!
Happy sewing!

Best,
Wendi
