So I spent last weekend cleaning out my sewing room. Holy cow! Did it need it! As Dragon*Con got closer and closer and I started getting more and more panicked about finishing all the costumes, I started just tossing aside pattern pieces and scraps, piling up my fabrics, and not putting anything away. Then I came home and jumped right into some Halloween projects and piled one mess on top of another. Time for a power clean!
I made a nice pile of good things I want to give to you all, but it's going to take me a few more days to figure out how I want to manage a giveaway. I also found some fun supplies that gave me an idea. So (naturally) I dropped all my other works in progress and tried out something new. :-)
I used to make make necklaces with little snippets of vintage children's books sandwiched between glass. It involved soldering and was kind of a mess and the fumes gave me a headache, so I stopped doing it. Then I found a source for some little frames (no solder needed!), ordered some samples, and promptly forgot about them.
I turned up those little frames in my cleaning rampage and immediately thought about embroidered pendants. Last night I reduced the size of one of my Rainbow Girls, stitched it up to make sure embroidered fabric wouldn't be too fat to work in the frame and. . . it worked! And I kind of love it!
What do you all think? Would you be interested in some little kits? I'm thinking a little tin box (like a mint tin) containing some frames, glass pieces, and a page of patterns for stitching - some girls, flowers, geometric designs, and some words to live by. These are 1" x 3" and make great pendants and holiday ornaments. They also come in 2" x 2" sizes that I thought would make nice holiday ornaments too. If you all are interested, let me know and I'll order in some supplies and make up some kits.
Happy stitching!
Best,
Wendi
I love those frames, but I have to be honest: I'm not a kit person. I already have ideas for those (actually, they seem to fit something I've already been trying to figure out), so I'd be more likely to buy the frames by themselves than a kit.
ReplyDeleteThe girl looks adorable like that. I do love those rainbow girls!!
LOVE! I could do it myself, but would maybe like a kit. Not everyone is super crafty and has time to assemble disparate pieces.
ReplyDeleteI used to not be big on kits - I have such a HUGE assortment of craft materials that I usually already have some of the components. But my daughter gets a lot of kits for birthday gifts, etc. and I'm starting to see the appeal of having everything you need in one convenient package. It's a great way to jump into a new (to you) craft.
ReplyDeleteHi! I think the kits are a great idea for gifts to give young girls learning to craft, its a cute idea..
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of kits! When I'm trying out something new, I'd much rather pay a little extra to have everything assembled together and ready to go than to pay a LOT extra to buy all the supplies in bulk and "cheap," but then not like the craft or not ever get around to it...
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone! My daughter got a couple of great kits for her birthday last month - so I've had kits on the brain. I'm thinking of having some fabric pre-printed with designs for sewing and/or embroidery especially for kids. Transferring or tracing patterns is truly the most tedious part of sewing and embroidery and I think it would be great for kids to be able to skip that part - especially on their first projects. :-)
