But first - the details about the sale. Buy any two patterns featured in this post and get any pattern from my shop (equal or lesser value please) for free. Just let me know what you'd like for the free pattern in the "Notes to Seller" field when you check out. Sale ends at midnight on Sunday 10/23 - just over a week from now.
Now - on to the goodies!
The Costume
It's the one thing you really, really need, right? In this video I show you how to whip up an easy costume in no time. With no pattern needed! And it works for a ton of different costume ideas. See the full post (with lots of photos) here.
Do you prefer to use a pattern? Here's a link to a rundown of some of my favorite commercial patterns for costuming.
Your costume might call for some new sewing techniques. Don't forget to check out the Sewing School link for a complete list of sewing videos. Two that you might find especially helpful are Sewing with Napped Fabrics and Applique with Fusible Adhesive. My daughter loves costumes made of velvet, and fusible applique is great for adding details to all kinds of costumes.
Trick or Treating
You'll need something to carry all that delicious candy, right? Mmmmm. . . Snickers. . . candy corn. . . Butterfinger! I'm so glad my daughter shares.
This pattern is available in the shop. You get all three designs and a bag that's the perfect size for school-age kids.
If your trick or treater is a little younger, you might want to go with a smaller bag. The Mini Tote is the perfect size and the pattern is a free download.
Instead of the pretty pink bird, dress up the bag with one of the monsters from the Monster Mash embroidery pattern.
Stitch it in glow-in-the-dark thread for extra coolness. There's a video showing you some of the quirks of the stuff here.
Is your kid the one swinging his bag of candy up over his head while he walks down the street? Candy is spilling everywhere? The Toothy Tote is the bag for him.
It zips closed so that nothing can fall out!
This bag is the wrong size and shape for trick or treating - but it's a monster and I love it so I'm including it here for fun.
The Beast Bag was designed especially to hold books. So let this serve as a reminder to check out some fun spooky titles on your next trip to the library, ok?
Just for Fun
Speaking of fun spooky things. . . how about making a special Halloween gift?
Frank and Vlad are cuddly soft dolls for little monster lovers out there. (If you already have the boy doll pattern, click here for more info (and a free download) showing you how to Halloweenify him.)
And this witch is an easy adaptation of the Rag Doll Pattern. Get some info about how to turn her into a witch - and a link to download the free hat pattern - here.
Want a glamorous witch for your wall? Here's an easy-to-embroider pattern.
And last but not least - a huggable owl softie.
This one is easy enough for kids to make with little or no help. My daughter (age 8) made the one on the cover! Want to see lots of other kid-made owls? Check out this post on sewing with kids.SALE
If you made it this far you must love Halloween as much as I do! Woo hoo! Remember - buy any two patterns featured in this post and get a third pattern (of equal or lesser value) FREE. Click here to go shopping. :-)
Happy Halloween! And have a great weekend everyone!
Best,
Wendi
