I finished the quilt!

Woo hoo! It was a really busy week and weekend for me - but I kept this quilt on my couch and stitched on the binding a few inches at a time, every time I had a couple of spare minutes. Those few inches at a time do add up. I got it done!

And now on to the next quilt.

I've been drafting up designs for a couple of different quilts that I want to offer as patterns. But I've been stuck on what kind of quilt to do: a scrap quilt (using up some of my overflowing scraps is always a good thing) or a quilt using pre-cuts (buying - and using - new fabric collections that I'm really excited about is also a good thing). The two kinds of quilts offer different kinds of design challenges - and I like doing both!

So I asked you. :-)

I put up a question on Facebook and asked: scraps or precuts? I also left things open for you to add additional options for people to vote on. One person has suggested mixing them - and another suggested two quilts, one made with precuts and one with scraps.

I'm especially intrigued by the second suggestion. There are certain classic designs that are perfect for scraps. Pinwheels. Nine-patches. Lots of star quilts. Quilts that work with pre-cuts are often designed to show off a particular fabric. The blocks tend to be bigger and the whole thing is more. . . uniform. (Not sure if that's exactly the word I'm looking for, but it's the best I can come up with at the moment.)

I'm kind of in love with the idea of designing a quilt to show off a fabric collection, and then adapting that same pattern to make it work well for scraps.

But I want to hear what more of you think! Please head over to the Facebook poll and cast your vote. Or leave your thoughts in the comments on this post, if you don't do the whole Facebook thing. :-)

I'm itching to make another quilt, now that I've gotten this one out of my UFO pile. Tell me what to do!

Happy Monday!

Best,
Wendi

  1. Gorgeous quilt! I love the colors and the design! I don't do the whole Facebook thing, so I will comment here on your dilemma : ) Personally, I'm new to sewing, so my scrap pile isn't that big. I would love to see a quilt using pre-cuts. However, I am enrolled in the Stitched workshop, so when I make the Peek-a-boo bear quilt, then I will have some scraps to work with!

  2. Beautiful Quilt! And you're making me homesick with the picture! Gorgeous Blue Ridge Mountains are a perfect backdrop!

Whatever you decide to share with us is fine with me. You make good stuff!

  3. I agree with Carrie and Becky, that is one gorgeous quilt there! Congrats on getting it done! :) I vote on FB already, for two quilts. I was just thinking, there are probably a lot of patterns that would work equally well with both precuts and scraps, just depends what you like I guess? I was thinking churn dash, or one like your scrappy quilt up top, or chinese coins, or something like Oh, Fransson!/Elizabeth Hartman's Charm Squares Baby Quilt pattern. When it comes to scrappy quilts, although nine patches (and split nine patches) and four patches and sixteen patches tend to be among my top favorites, here is another that I am v.v. fond of: http://tinyurl.com/SimpleStarQuilt

    1. That Simple Star quilt is really pretty! It's similar to one my MIL made for my daughter when she was born.

The first quilts I start with (for patterns) will all be squares and rectangles - but we'll move into some triangle blocks pretty quickly. Thanks for sharing the link!
