We spent a good part of our summer making these. Alan (my husband) does all the foam work and structural assembly. I do anything that has to do with fabric - sewing the costumes and "upholstering" the foam. The Masquerade is always the highlight of Dragon*Con for us - this year we won Best Humor. My husband wrote up a whole post about these costumes - with lots of pictures and details about how they work. You can read it here.
My daughter Jo participated in the Costume Contest too. She makes her own costume and competes every year in the Junior group. This year she was Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas.
I drafted the dress pattern and gave her some instruction on how to do everything, but she did all the sewing herself! Didn't she do a great job? I posted all the step-by-step photos (with fairly detailed captions, in case you want to try making a version yourself) on Flickr. Here's the slideshow.
By the end of Dragon*Con every year I'm completely in Halloween mode. So get ready for some fun costuming posts and patterns! I wanted to jump right in to some new videos, but I broke a blood vessel in my eye and I look too gross to record right now. Really. My husband and daughter flinch every time they look at me. It would be in keeping with the Halloween theme, but I really don't want to share with the world my eyeball looking like it's completely full of blood. Eww.
If you have any specific Halloween questions or requests, please ask them in the comments or email me and I'll answer as many as I can in the upcoming weeks.
Happy stitching!
Best,
Wendi
