Craft Hope Project 17 - Aprons for Haiti

You all know about Craft Hope - right?
Craft Hope is a love inspired project designed to share handmade crafts with those less fortunate. It is our hope to combine our love for crafting and desire to help others into a project to make a difference around the world.

Craft Hope is run by Jade Laswell from her home in a sleepy little town just outside of Austin, Texas. While juggling four kids and a laptop, we are changing lives!
Their newest project is gathering aprons to send to Haitian women. You can find all the details here. In a nutshell. . .

1. Make an apron. Something pretty, but practical and made from washable fabrics.
2. Send your apron to Haiti by Hand (the address is here) by May 31.
3. Share this info with all your stitchy friends.

I'm going to make a few aprons this weekend, and I want to make it easy for you to make some too. So. . . I'm reminding you about my free apron pattern, and having a sale on my other apron patterns. 50% off through the end of the month (when the Craft Hope Project ends). Use code CRAFTHOPE for the discount.

Download the free apron pattern here. This is a super easy apron - you can whip one up in 1-2 hours (less if you're a speedy sewist). It doesn't have any frills or embellishment - think of it as a blank template for you to play with. Add a ruffle to the hem, some rickrack along the bottom, a bit of embroidery, whatever you like. Or make it just as it is with a fabulous fabric that doesn't need any extra fanciness.

Want to do some stash busting? Then I recommend the Hot Stuff Patchwork Apron pattern. I used several of my orange scraps of this one, and you can see it here, made up by a talented reader in fresh greens.

Finally, there's the Get to Work Apron - a functional apron ideal for cooking, gardening, or other work. It has three handy pockets across the front and is a fun project for mixing and matching fabrics. This is another quick and easy one - expect to spend an hour or two on it.

So - all aprons are 50% off through the end of the month. Use code CRAFTHOPE for the discount. And be sure to share photos of anything you make before you ship them off. :-)

Happy sewing!

Best,
Wendi

  1. Hi, this is such a nice idea!! I have a few quick questions. In the pattern you provide for free, how would I make measurements if I don't know the recipient? Is there a standard set of measurements? Also, can I use any apron pattern?

    1. That's a great question, Aubrey! For a woman's apron in the Easy Apron or Patchwork style I'd recommend 24 inches wide x 16 inches tall, with a tie 96 inches (for wrapping around and tying in front) or 72 inches (for just tying in the back). The Get to Work Apron has recommended measurement for kids, women and men.

You can use any apron pattern for the Craft Hope Project. They have guidelines on their site, but in general they're looking for full and half aprons that are pretty - but not too fancy to be washed.
