A Quilt (Top) in a Day

Yesterday I gave myself the day off to play with fabric. I started the day with these fat quarters and a plan - and ended with this. . .

My goals for this project were. . .
  • Showcase a fabric collection I love.
  • Make efficient use of fat quarters.
  • Design a quilt that would be easy for beginners (and everyone else) to piece. That means no seam intersections and a design that's forgiving if your seams aren't exactly 1/4 inch.
  • Have fun!

Achievement unlocked!

I started after breakfast and finished before dinner and had a great day. That included ironing all my fabric, cutting pieces, taking step by step photos, piecing, pressing, seam ripping, stopping to chat with a friend for an hour, ripping out a few more seams and correcting a math error, and posting about the process on Facebook. I even pieced the quilt back after dinner, but a thunderstorm rolled in and it got too dark to take photos. I'll do that later today.

I'm layering and basting the quilt today, but I'm out of gray thread so I won't be able to quilt and bind it until next week. :-(

I can't wait to make another! I'm working on a scrappy variation.

Have a great day everyone!

Best,
Wendi

  2. This is so cool. I've only been subscribed to your blog for a very short time, but I've already come to love that little ray of sunshine in my inbox. "I wonder what Wendi's up to today again?" And it's all very inspiring to get crafty and you do make stuff look do-able. Thanks for that! :)
And this pattern is cool. Maybe even *I* could do that... It takes me an hour just to shorten pants. No, not by hand. With my self-threading sewing machine. Neat freak when it comes to these things, you know. The thought of quilting still feels like, "Yeah, like I NEED to create that much sewing problems in my life..."
Maybe I'll start with the beast bag.
    'nuff rambled.

    1. Rebecca - Making a quilt is WAY easier than shortening pants. Unless the pants have perfectly straight legs which they never, ever do. :-)

  3. Yours is one of 3 blogs that I read every day even if my time is limited. This is a great quilt idea. When I first glanced at the pattern I saw capital letters. I'm thinking that a baby quilt or wall hanging with some letters that can be made with straight lines. I also have some small pieces of beautiful/sentimental fabric.

    1. Thanks so much for your nice note! Making a quilt with big, blocky letters would be terrific - I love big, bold and graphic!

  4. Wendi, I love love love both the fabrics and the design. What a wonderful way to showcase your favorite fat quarters. Thanks again for the inspiration. Your video series taught me how to embroider and I love it so much that I am publishing my first pattern on my blog today. You rock!
