Time to introduce The Eggheads - the last softie pattern of the Monster Horde collection. You can find it here.
When I teach kids I always seem to have one kid in the class who wants to make geometric shapes - usually a sphere or a cube. So I've developed a few patterns for those shapes over time. I decided to play with the idea of a sphere for this guy - stretching it out into more of an egg shape - an egg shape with three sides so there's a good (seamless) side for a face, arms on either side of the body, and fanciness down the center of the back. Here's what I came up with!
Next on the worktable was Eugene. The whole furry front of him is a big pocket - perfect for storing little treasures.
Sometimes it seems like I'm obsessed with softies-with-pockets. That's because I had a teddy bear when I was a kid - my favorite teddy bear - and she had a hole in her neck. I used to hide my diary key in there, until it managed to work its way down her back. It's still in there. :-) So now I make softies with actual pockets - not just holes in their bodies. But I digress. . .
It took me a couple of tries to get Eugene right - his mouth wasn't looking mouthy enough - until I added really big teeth. :-) Then he was just right!
Finally - there's Cedric. He's not really more difficult than the others, he just takes a little more time. You have to sew the rickrack across his belly, embroider the eyes and mouth, sew the hands and feet, and fold these ridges that run down his back.
He's very proud of those back ridges so I had to point them out special. :-) So Cedric has a lot of smaller pieces, but they're very easy to sew and he's all easy-to-work-with fleece, so he's definitely still an easy project.
So know you know who the Eggheads are - tell me which one you'd make first! And for whom! Your comments all week have been great and it really helps me know what you like best as I start work on the next collection.
I'm giving away another pack of softie-making supplies - some fur, fleece, safety eyes and plastic pellets. US only again, I'm afraid (but tomorrow I'll announce a giveaway for EVERYONE). Comment on the post for your entry and I'll draw a winner tomorrow morning.
You can get the Eggheads pattern here (instant delivery, so you can start sewing today) and all the Monster Horde patterns here. If you want everything in the collection, remember to use the discount code MONSTERHORDE for $5 off the bundle!
Happy sewing!
Best,
Wendi
I love them all! I would most likely make Hugh first--just because he would make me laugh while I was working on the other too--I can tell he is a fun guy with a great sense of humor!
ReplyDeleteHugh definitely makes me laugh!
DeleteI would make Eugene first for my grandson who has some problems but just loves pockets, so everything I make for him always has lots of texture and at least one pocket or two. Love them all and will be purchasing them very, very soon
ReplyDeleteEugene sounds like he'll have a perfect little friend. :-)
DeleteI would make Hugh first!
ReplyDeleteLove them all
Thanks!
DeleteI will be making Cedric first! I love those spines, any little one would love playing with those :)

The spines are so much fun! And so easy. . .
DeleteOh, Eugene without question! Such a funny face, love the pockets (I too, am obsessed with pockets and those teeth - oh my! Could sell these to dentists?!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you all like the pocket so much!
DeleteI would have to make one of them, which to do first I just cannot choose. Hmmm, perhaps I would have one of my children choose for me!
ReplyDeleteYou'll have to choose soon - because you're the winner! Send your mailing address to me at blockhead@wendigratz.com and I'll get your supply pack in the mail to you. Congratulations!
DeleteI received my box of goodies! Now I'll have to decide how to use them! Thank you!!!!
DeleteI can't wait to see what you make!
DeleteI also love them all, but Eugene will be my first. I love love love the pocket- what little monster won't?!- and the teeth!!! Now if I can just navigate the fur - which you already took care of for me with you wonderful tutorial videos! You rock and inspire me!
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to see lots of furry creations soon! It's so much easier to work with than you'd expect. :-)
DeleteI just love the down turned horns on Hugh! He does look a little insane...lol Thanks so much for another great softie pattern!!
ReplyDeleteALOHA,
Andrea
I'd make Hugh for my nine year old. She marches to the beat of her own drum and it looks like Hugh does, too.
ReplyDeleteOh - he definitely does. :-) That's a very nice way of putting it.
DeleteAll are so cute and clever! I do absolutely LOVE the insanity in Hugh's smile, however. I look like that at work sometimes. ;-) Keep them coming, Wendi!
ReplyDeleteI will! Thanks!
DeleteThey are all great, but I really like Hugh!!
ReplyDeleteHugh was a clear winner. You all seem to like insanity. :-)
DeleteHugh reminds me of certain beloved family members!
ReplyDeleteMe too. :-)
